Square Dancing FAQ:
What is Square Dancing?
Square dancing is walking within a square with a group of 8 people (4 couples) listening to a caller. The caller gives the dancers the name of the synchronized movements, or calls, and the dancers carry out the moves. Each dancer must know his/her part of the movement, or call, so that all 8 people can complete the set of movements successfully or the square breaks down and the dancers begin again.
Who teaches the lessons and calls the movements?
The caller teaches the lessons and is responsible for “calling out” instructions, movements, or calls for the dancers to perform or carry out to music.
What is a call?
Each call is a movement, or instruction, which has a definite definition as to the pattern in which each of the eight dancers completes. The definitions of the calls are a combination of arm, hand and/or foot movements. Foot movements focus on walking or a shuffling/sliding step. The calls are based on the Caller Lab’s List, & are used internationally.
How many calls will I learn to square dance?
The most commonly used levels of square dancing are Mainstream and Plus. The Mainstream list includes 69 movements and Plus Level has 31 additional calls. Plus Level calls are learned after a year of successful dancing. These use the Mainstream calls as a beginning and add a little more to the call.
How long does it take to learn the basic calls?
Approximately 12 weeks, but the dancer must continue to attend weekly dances to fully learn the calls. To become proficient, beginners must dance weekly.
How expensive is square dancing?
The cost of lessons is nominal. Each lesson costs approximately $5.00 per person or $10.00 per couple per week for a period of approximately 12 weeks. Prices vary with different clubs.
Is the environment at the square dance safe?
Yes, because alcohol/drugs/or smoking are NOT allowed.
Do only “old” people square dance?
Everyone is encouraged to learn to square dance. Experienced dancers, or angels, attend lessons to help new dancers. Students must be able to hear, remember instructions, be committed to learning the calls, attending the lessons & open to making new friends.
Do only couples come to lessons?
Couples and singles are welcome.
What am I supposed to wear for lessons?
Casual attire and comfortable shoes are worn during lessons. Dress in layers since you get warmer as you dance.
What do you wear when attending regular square dances?
Men wear long sleeved shirts, pants and comfortable shoes/boots. Women can wear the traditional square dance dress, a regular blouse with skirt, or longer prairie skirt. Comfortable shoes are a must.
